  1. 1.  King of England Alfred, the GreatKing of England Alfred, the Great was born in 849 in Wantage, Berkshire, England, United Kingdom; died on 26 Oct 899 in , , England, United Kingdom; was buried in Winchester Cathedral, London, Greater London, England, United Kingdom.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As : Alfred the Great, Father of the English Navy
    • Stories and Notes: Anglo-Saxon king 871–899 who defended England against Danish invasion and founded the first English navy. He succeeded his brother Aethelred to the throne of Wessex in 871, and a new legal code came into force during his reign. He encouraged the translation of scholarly works from Latin (some he translated himself), and promoted the development of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. This ensured that his deeds were recorded in history as legends and we know more about him than any other Anglo Saxon King.
    • Stories and Notes: He was superior to all his brothers .. both in wisdom and in all good habits, and furthermore because he was warlike beyond measure and victorious in almost all battles' - Asser's Life of Alfred, 893 AD
    • To Lady Kathleen: 29 x great grandfather
    • Occupation: 871 to 899; King of England

    Notes:

Alfred created a series of fortifications to surround his kingdom and provide needed security from invasion. The Anglo-Saxon word for these forts, "burh", has come down to us in the common place-name suffix, "bury." He also constructed a fleet of ships to augment his other defenses, and in so doing became known as the "Father of the English Navy." The reign of Alfred was known for more than military success. He was a codifier of law, a promoter of education and a suppor|er of the arts. He, himself, was a scholar and translated Latin books into the Anglo-Saxon tongue. The definitive contemporary work on Alfred's life is an unfinished account in Latin by Asser, a Welshman, bishop of Sherbourne and Alfred's counsellor. After his death, he was buried in his capital city of Winchester, and is the only English monarch in history to carry the title, "the Great."

    Occupation:
He prevented the Danish conquest of England, defeating them at Edington after a campaign of guerrila warfare. After his victory he allowed the Danes to keep their conquests in Mercia and East Anglia provided that Guthrum, their King, was convert ed to Christianity. Alfred built a navy of Warships to defend the south coast against further Danish invasions and protected Wessex with a chain of fortifications. He took London (886),this gaining control of all England except the Danish areas.

Alfred married Ealhswith Mucil in 868 in Winchester, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom. Ealhswith (daughter of Earl of Gaine Aethelred Mucil and Eadburga, of Mercia) was born in 852 in Mercia, England; died on 5 Dec 905 in St. Mary's Abbey, Winchester, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom. Historians have not treated Eadwig well, and it is unfortunate for him that he ran afoul of the influential Bishop Dunstan early in his reign. Legend has it that his coronation had to be delayed while Dunstan dislodged him from a bed where he was lying between his sweetheart and her equally amorous Mother. Dunstan was, after that incident, never exactly a favourite of Eadwig's, and it may be fair to say that Eadwig even hated Dunstan, for he apparently exiled him soon after this. Eadwig went on to marry Ælgifu, the girl with whom he was keeping company at the time of Dunstan's intrusion. For her part, " the strumpet" was eventually referred to as among "the most illustrious of women", and Eadwig, in his short reign, was generous in making grants to the church and other religious institutions. He died when he was barely 20.
