He conquered much of western Europe and united it under a great empire. By 800, Charlemagne's realm extended from central Italy north to Denmark and from eastern Germany west to the Atlantic Ocean. Pope Leo III crowned him emperor of the Roman s on Christmas Day, 800. This act led to the birth of the Holy Roman Empire, which lasted in some form until 1806
